Your Happily Ever After

"The Trials of Infertility: Sorrow and Hope" A guest post

Monday, March 30, 2009

Incidents of infertility and adoption in the LDS church are more common than most people realize. (This is evident from the number of stories that I've heard regarding the couple who "got pregnant as soon as they tried to adopt!".) :p

Even so, there are a lot of myths surrounding infertility and adoption. Most of these come from outdated information or even just folklore. Infertile people are told to "just relax" or "maybe all you have to do is show Heavenly Father how faithful you are and then he'll give you a baby".

Regarding adoption, some people think that all birth mothers are teenagers (actually, most are in their 20s), some think the agency chooses the adoptive family (the birth mothers make that decision), and some think all adoptions are -or should be- closed, meaning the birth family never has contact with the child again (actually, open adoptions are now actively encouraged by LDS Family Services). For more Adoption Myths, click here.

Every story of infertility and adoption has similar elements, but everyone's story is ultimately different.

This is my story.

Que and I met when we were both 16. We started dating at 18 and I even "waited" for Que when he served his mission to Bolivia. After he returned home we were married in the Salt Lake Temple. We had been married for about 18 months when we decided we would try to start our family. This began what would be a six-year emotional roller coaster. After doctors and surgeries couldn't help us, we were left feeling hopeless and frustrated. (It's a good thing Que and I have each other!)

Finally, for me, I realized that my desire to be a mother outweighed my desire to be pregnant. Beginning the adoption process finally gave me hope I had never felt before. And even though I knew it would be hard, it felt right.

My journey up until now has underscored for me the importance of the atonement and how much my Father in Heaven loves us. I realized that even if Que and I were never blessed in this life with raising children, that it was not a sign that He loved us less or that we were somehow being punished.

I don't yet know the ending to our adoption story. And that's ok because we will do our part while putting our trust in Him and submitting our will to His.

To be continued...

Brittany was born and raised in Utah. She graduated from West Jordan High School and Salt Lake Community College. In 2001 she married her sweetheart, Que, in the Salt Lake Temple. They currently live in the Salt Lake valley with their golden retriever, Madison, and their cat, Parley P. Cat. When she's not working, she enjoys reading about Joseph Smith and the temple, remodeling homes with Que (she designs, he builds), playing the piano, and reading books by her favorite authors, Jane Austen and Edith Wharton. She is the author of the book Prepare Now for the Temple and is currently hoping to adopt. Her writing blog is www.authorbee.blogspot.com and her adoption blog is www.queandbrittanysblog.blogspot.com

Tower of Strength by Annette Lyon

Monday, March 16, 2009

Tower of Strength, by Annette Lyon is not the Mormon fiction from your youth. You will not feel the need to order a giant bottle of Sparkling Apple Cider to go along with your Cheese (Because we all know that Mormon's don't drink wine). It is far from the suck-tastic reputation that has besieged the genre of Mormon fiction.

I was pleasantly surprised with Annette's book. I was really worried that it was going follow the bad rap that is Mormon Fiction. It doesn't. It was a well written story with some LDS themes thrown in. She has just the right amount of romance, suspense, drama and mystery all cleverly woven together to make a masterpiece. I read this book with my teenager daughter, and found the experience to be delightful. My daughter said that typically romance novels leave her feeling bad about her life... but this one didn't. I completely agree with her.

The characters are real, and sympathetic. You will hate the Mother-in-law in the story and rejoice when the hero finally tells her to "stick it where the sun don't shine". OK, he does it in a much nicer 1880's type of a way, but you get the idea.

The main character, Tabitha, is a strong courageous woman. Honestly? The way the women in the 1880's were treated infuriated me. To hear men talk about women "needing only to knit something" made my head spin. It would have been difficult at best to be a strong woman in those days. Let alone a successful one.

I would, without reservation, recommend this book. Especially if you like to read with your daughters. This book is perfect for that... You will not worry one bit about something questionable popping up, as it is a wholesome, easy read.

Reader Shout Outs

Friday, March 13, 2009

Quite regularly, we get emails requesting that we advertise Giveaways, Swaps or Meet 'n Greets for people. While we would love to be able to do that, with the amount of blogs that we have listed here on the MMB, it's just not possible.

However, we decided to do a regular feature entitled Reader Shout-Outs. Where you, our readers, can link to us with the various events you have going on.

Just follow these easy instructions to list your Giveaway, Swap, or Meet n' Greet.

1. Enter your name, expiration date of event, and what the giveaway/swap item is.
2. Link directly to your blog post about your giveaway/swap (so we don't have to go fishing around).
3. Leave a comment. The funnier the better!

Each month we will delete out all of the expired events so that this list will always carry the most current, up to date events being hosted by fellow members of the MMB.

The readers have spoken

Friday, March 06, 2009

It was close, it was tough, it was a cat fight, but we've finally got ourselves a blog spotlight.

The public has spoken, and The Misplaced Americans is our winner! She is an American having an International experience, and reading about her daily experiences is WAY more exciting or exotic than a trip to the local Wal-mart. That's for sure. Her writing style is quick and refreshing. She uses humor to make a bad situation funny. Besides, when she shows photos like THESE, how can you not come back wanting more? Go check her out, she's a funny American having a "foreign" expierience. (I'm sort of jealous!)
