Ultra Dental Water Jet

Monday, November 30, 2009

I have teeth issues.

I still have baby teeth (bizarre), my wisdom teeth never came in, I have receding gums, and don't even get me started on sensitivity.

Naturally, when the good people at WaterPik.com offered to send me the Ultra Dental Water Jet WP-100, I said yes.

When it got here, I opened the package right up and took it to my bathroom to test it out.

I read through the instructions, which are simple enough, and chose to start with the standard Jet Tips. I placed the tip along the back of my gumline and turned the Water Jet on. It took me a few tries to find the ideal amount of pressure for  me.  It also took me awhile to figure out how to clean my teeth, continue breathing, and not spray water on the mirror, all at the same time.

Of all the attachments, the pik pocket is my favorite. Like I said, I have receding gums, and it has been a daily battle to keep them as healthy as possible. The pik pocket attachment goes right to the gum line where it cleans and massages, gently and effectively.

I was surprised by the difference between regular brushing and the the Water Jet. I could taste the difference. It was as if I had just been cleaned by the dentist.

If you're looking into a water jet system, I'd definitely recommend the Ultra Dental Water Jet. It's small, powerful, and worth every penny.

Dear MMB:

Friday, November 27, 2009

Dear MMB,

I've kind of been wondering about this for a while, and wondered if you would be willing to do a discussion about it. Is it wrong to buy hot chocolate from Starbucks? Or candy from a liquor store? You know, avoiding the appearance of evil and all. I've discussed it with a few friends and everyone seems to have a different opinion. I just was curious to see what a larger group had to say.

I'm lovin' the new MMB, by the way. Thanks for all the hours you guys have put into it!

Thanks,

Rachel Sue

Televisions.
Most of us have at least one.
There's that old saying: Moderation in all things... SO.
How much TV is too much TV?
Do you let your children watch TV?
Do you watch TV?
What are you watching?
Lets talk about television viewing habits and ways to promote moderation in all things.

Helping Adolescents Make Decisions in Advance

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Parenting nine children through life requires a lot of “stuff”! Through it all we must have thought of literally a thousand ideas to try to make things work better. Some had to be tailored to an individual kid and some we figured needed to apply to the whole bunch whether they like it or not. About 20 of those ideas actually worked. But if I had to pick just one that really made the biggest difference it might be this: teaching kids, especially adolescents and teenagers to make good decisions in advance.

My husband Richard and I have had the opportunity to teach families all over the world. How we got there still amazes us. It was guided by Heaven! We make presentations to families on how to improve their family skills, establish family mission statements, have family meetings and organize a family infrastructure. One year we had the fun experience of being in Istanbul, Turkey. There we found families from vastly varied religions who loved each other and were striving to do their best, just as we do in our own church. On this particular occasion the parents were joined for the last hour by their adolescent children 12-18.

Our little workshop with them was about teaching those budding teenagers how to make good decisions. We started by suggesting to the parents that they give their children a special journal, perhaps even inscribed with their name, where they could record their life experiences… but that they should first have them turn to the last page and put a title at the top that says, DECISIONS I HAVE MADE IN ADVANCE. We then suggest that they talk through with their kids in a private one-on-one session, the important things that they can decide right now to make their lives happier and safer for the future.

It’s fun to get them thinking at first about decisions they can make now by laughing with them about things they can’t decide right now like whom they are going to marry or where they’re going to be in 2020. Then we get them thinking about things that they can decide about right now. The things they come up with usually involve honesty, drugs, going to college, smoking, alcohol and pre-marital sex.

We suggest that parents challenge their kids to choose something that they feel confident they can decide to do or not to do….right now. When the adolescent finds a decision he/she wants to make for sure i.e.”I will never smoke” it should be recorded on that last page of the journal. It should be formally signed and dated, even sealed with sealing wax to make it more binding if necessary. It then becomes that child’s personal pact with himself. He/she then owns that decision, which is so much better than all the preaching and cajoling, counseling and rewarding that a parent can do. !

On this night, we chose a darling 12 year old boy named Andrew from the audience as our “guinea pig” and asked him about what he felt he could write on his page about a decision he could make in advance. He immediately said, “I will never take drugs.” When asked if he was absolutely sure, he said, “Yes, I’m sure.” He was ready to write it down, sign and seal it.

“But wait Andrew” we said, this could be harder than your realize right now. Project yourself ahead about 5 years and imagine that you are at a party with the most popular girl in the school who you really like. All your best friends are there and this amazing girl opens up her hand to you and shows you a little white pill and urges you to try it. She tells you that everyone at the party has taken one, that you’ll feel totally left out if you don’t take it and that you’ll have the best time of your life if you just try it! She tells you that it just makes you feel fabulous in just a few minutes. What would you do?”

Andrew thought for a moment and then with a smile he said, “I would just say, ‘You know, I promised myself that I would never take anything like that when I was 12 years old. Would you want me to break that promise?’

Beautiful! What a guy! Having that answer firmly in his mind will be a huge advantage to him as he enters the scary world of adulthood. When that actually happens, which it most likely will, he is ready with his answer!

Just as an aside, when we asked him whether or not he could promise himself that he would never cheat on a test in school, he hesitated. It felt as though it was already too late on that one and he’d have to reconsider that before he could write it down. With giggles from the audience, he promised that he would consider that and let us know his answer.

Working with our own children on their “Decisions in Advance” was a process over several months for each child. We talked about each decision one at a time and posed “worse case scenarios” that might be stumbling blocks to their decisions. It is one of the most valuable things we have ever done. They had answers ready for tough situations. The decision was already made. It has been an anchor in many tough situations that has kept them rooted and helped them dodge many an unexpected bullet in their growing up years. When we really help our kids think through their own decisions, it gives them ownership of their own goals instead of it being your goals for them. Once they make the decisions without feeling that they’ve been pushed or forced or lectured, they own them and the likelihood of follow through, though not guaranteed, rises significantly.

If you are a mother of a “middle aged” kid, this concept of helping kids make decisions in advance is worth thinking about. It’s a pretty good insurance policy and a grand safety net for your adolescents and teenagers who are splashing into a scary world with whacky values that don’t often match with our own beliefs.

General Conference Discussion - Elder Jorge F. Zeballos

Monday, November 23, 2009

This week we’ll spend a little time counting our blessings. The talk “Attempting the Impossible” was given by Elder Jorge F. Zeballos during the Saturday afternoon session of General Conference, and he testifies that we truly have access to blessings we sometimes might feel are out of our reach. I think it kind of slipped under the radar for me when I watched conference, but it caught my eye as I was flipping through the Ensign. I’ve been learning a lot of lessons lately about how a “purely human point of view” just doesn’t cut it as far as seeing things how they really are. Learning to see our circumstances, the course of our lives, and even ourselves the way the Lord sees them all is quite liberating. I’m curious to hear what you find in this talk that helps you see the impossible through different eyes.

o2009pulpit_2_4_zebal

“From a purely human point of view, at first [the commandment to become perfect] seems to be an impossible task. However, it begins to appear possible upon understanding that in order to achieve it, we are not alone. The most marvelous and powerful helps for which a human being may seek are always available.”

“Eternal life is to live with our Father and with our families forevermore. Should not this promise be the greatest incentive to do the best within our reach?”

You can read the talk here, or watch it here, or listen to it here. It is also on page 33 of the conference edition of the Ensign.

What does Elder Zeballos' talk help you learn about
your abilities, your possibilities, or your responsibilities?

What does the talk inspire you to do?

Dear MMB

Friday, November 20, 2009

Dear MMB:

I have a question about Feminism. What do you think about it? Is it really that hairy-legged-Birkenstock-wearing-tree-hugging-man-hater that's hiding in the bushes to steal your bra and burn it? I'm so confused. I want to know what other MMB-ers think about Feminism. Is it possible to post a Dear MMB on this subject? I just want to know what people really think.

Please don't use my real name with this if you choose to post it. I really appreciate everything you are doing for the LDS blogging community, and I respect the opinions of you and your readers.

Thanks in advance,

~Mabel *not her real name*

Well, well, well. {cracks knuckles} I think I'm going to take this one on because I've been actively arguing this a lot lately.

People seem to think that feminism means women should be able to do whatever they want, whenever they want, however they want. They want to be equal to men. They want to make the same amount of money. They want everything RIGHT! NOW! DANGIT! So I'm going to let you all in on a little secret.

A) That's not exactly what it means and

B) That's just not how it works.

Yes, we have made great strides in the last century pertaining to women's rights. We can vote. We can go to school. We can provide for ourselves and our families. We, hopefully, are getting the same pay, and have access to the same promotions. All of those things are great and noble. We are very lucky to live in a time like this, where we get to have options.

But the part I want to focus on today, mostly because this IS Mormon Mommy Blogs, is the mommy aspect of the feminist movement.

When it comes to motherhood, our strongest opposition is other women.

How many times have we read about the debate between working moms and stay at home moms? How many times have we been told that what we do doesn't really "count"? How many of us have been ostracized, or spoken down to, or otherwise admonished because of our decision to fulfill that divine role of wife and mother?

I know I have.

I also know that it has never been a man that has said, "Oh, you mean you just stay home all day? You don't DO anything?"

Nope, that slap in the face up there has always come from another woman. A woman that was better than me because she had a real job and she made real money.

Let me be very clear, I am a feminist in the strongest sense of the word. Women are powerful. Women are amazing. Women. Are. Feminine.

We have amazing abilities. Beyond creating life, which is more deeply spiritual than many realize, we have the ability to love, to have compassion, to multitask.

We also are our hardest critics. Handing out unwarranted criticisms for the slightest offense. Taking to heart the smallest things and letting them tear us down.

But what does it mean to me personally? It means that I made a choice. I made a choice to close my successful business because I wanted to stay home. I made a choice when I woke up this morning to do it with a smile on my face and a song in my heart. I made a choice when I kissed my husband goodbye and thanked him for providing for us. I made the choice and I stand firmly behind it. This is what I want to do. This is where I want to be. Sure, the pay is lousy, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

Simply put, to me, feminism is whatever validates and inspires womanhood.

Gratitude for Cilia that Works!

Thursday, November 19, 2009

A whole new world of gratitude has opened up to us this year as we contemplate Thanksgiving. With a new diagnosis of a rare syndrome for our little three year old granddaughter Lucy, we have realized what an incredibly amazing, intricate, astounding creation our bodies are!

In talking to probably the world's most knowledgeable Doctor on this Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, Dr. Philip Beales, who is based in London, we have discovered the amazing fact that on the 9th day of conception, Lucy's little hair like strands attached to her cells (and all our cells) called cilia uniformly started waving like octopus tentacles to the left. Most of us have cilia that wave to the right, but for some reason her genetically generated messages directed them to start waving to the left…which means that her internal organs are all placed perfectly on her left side instead of the right, which is unusual, even for this syndrome!

There were other incredible manifestations of this rare genetic disease which required a mutant gene on both sides of the family…so rare that we would have to go back many generations on each side of the family to find it! But there they were…that rare genetic combination…telling Lucy's body to make an extra toe, telling her optic nerves that they would degenerate and create something called retinitis pigmentosa which would render her legally blind sometime between the ages of 9 and 15. Not only that, those cilia registered an order to slow down her metabolism and to turn most of her "fuel" into fat. We're still trying to figure out how those other "orders" will manifest themselves in the future but they will likely affect her kidneys and possibly her heart.

Just like everyone who is diagnosed with any malady, as soon as you announce that you have blown your ACL or have broken an arm, an army of people show up to commiserate and give advice. We have been amazed to realize that this also applies to syndromes…even rare syndromes. Parents have come out of the woodwork to tell us about the myriads of syndromes they are dealing with, many who have children who are affected in much more difficult ways and with much more dire results.

Again, all of this has led us to realize what amazing machines our bodies are! With all the intricacies and co-dependence each body system has on all the other systems, it is truly a miracle that any of us are normal! Or are any of us normal? We all have issues. Some are just more evident than others, right?

As the Thanksgiving season rolls around, we who know Lucy have formed an I Love Lucy Club and are ever more grateful for this adorable little individual who is such a joy to her parents, siblings, grandparents and enormous gaggle of cousins. Life just wouldn't be as rich…or as difficult (which is what we need to grow) without Lucy. She accelerates the things we need to learn on this earth…love, compassion, getting out of our comfort zone, patience, empathy and problem-solving techniques!

We are encouraged by ongoing research to slow and/or alter the blindness issues and to deal with obesity in children. Lucy's mom Shawni Pothier and her grandmother Linda Eyre have released a new book for mothers which was published just as Lucy was diagnosed called A Mother's Book of Secrets which features loveable Lucy on the cover. They are donating all royalties for the book to research on Lucy's issues.

If you are looking for a great gift idea for your mother, sister, daughter or friend for Christmas that also contributes to a great cause or need an idea for a for a great stimulating Book Club book in the coming year purchasing this book will certainly help Lucy's cause! You'll enjoy Shawni's spectacular family photography as you learn how to be a better mother with 40 little secrets from a seasoned mother of 9 grown children and a "down and dirty" mother with five young children. See the light in the trenches of motherhood as you learn the importance of taking care of yourself, finding your balance and getting rid of the guilt. Learn how to give your family a sense of purpose through creating a short Family Mission Statement and how to create great memories through traditions. You'll find myriads of fun ideas that include establishing family laws, teaching kids how to work hard and deal with money as well as the joy of service. There are also methods for teaching your kids to work out their arguments without your intervention, how to have fun with the BIG TALK about sex at age 8 and how to help your children make good choices in advance. By buying this book you can join the "I Love Lucy Club" as you also give this gift of inspiration to the Mothers in your life or the Mother in YOU!

Our publisher has joined our cause and is offering a 20% discount for online orders. You can order immediately by clicking here. During this season of gratitude, we are especially grateful for our own cilia that somehow worked as it should and for those of you who have discovered that the greatest gratitude of all should go to those who serve in the world's greatest cause… Motherhood!

Linda Eyre is the mother of nine, grandmother of 18. Her mission statement includes empowering mothers to be "Empowerers". As a co-founder of home-based Joy Schools 30 years ago, she has since authored or co-authored with her husband and daughters many books on parenting and especially the joys and trials of Motherhood...most remembered of which is: I Didn't Plan to be a Witch. She and her husband are worldwide speakers and advocates for the family.

*Site Updates*

Thursday, November 19, 2009

Hello everyone! Are you loving the giveaways as much as we are? Good!

I just wanted to give a quick update on a few things. MMB is undergoing some site maintenance right now, so bear with us as changes are made.

Also, while we're going through all of our sister sites, we're noticing that some of the blogs listed have died a slow death. Some bloggers have gone private, while some have disappeared altogether. When we come across a blog listing that is no longer available, IT IS DELETED. We are keeping active links only.

If your blog has been deleted, or if you decide to open your blog to readers again, we would be more than happy to relist you. You will need to contact us using the general guidelines for getting listed as outlined here.

In the meantime, enter the giveaways and keep enjoying MMB!

Thanks!

Discussion Wednesday - Discipline

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Most parents talk about discipline a lot…both as a concept and as a verb.
But what is it?
How DO you discipline?
What works for one child is sure to backfire on the next.

Does time-out work?
Does grounding work?
How do you discipline teenagers?
What does and doesn't work with teens?

Lets discuss discipline... both the concept and the verb.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Attention all Fairy Tale Creature Things
(or in otherwords, MMB-ers)

Apparently there was a little glitch in our entry form... We HAD infolinks on our site, but they were redirecting people to a different site that was an entry form as well.

Dumb.

We also noticed a bunch of Anti-Mormon Ad's being run through our site from this company.

Double Dumb.

We have now kicked that Ad Company to the curb. Hardcore kicking. We offer our sincerest apologies.

If you entered one of our giveaways, chances are we didn't receive your entry.

Triple Dumb.

SO. If you really want to win the prizes from YESTERDAY OR TODAY, you need to enter again.

SUPER DUMB. (we know. we're sorry.)

We have fixed all the glitches and our MMB account is now collecting all your data in our Google Doc's account. Once the various winners are chosen, we will delete everything.

Pinky Swear.

That is all.
