That's easy: A promise and the Spirit.
The World is hard peeps, and our teens are bombarded with hard things daily. I'm holding Elder Bednar to his promise where he stated:
". . . And I promise you will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary. As you participate in and love this holy work, you will be safeguarded in your youth and throughout your lives."
If my teenagers are involved with Family History an Apostle has promised they will be protected. That's enough motivation for me to make them Index every single day for the rest of their lives. I don't care when they get it done, or how long it takes as long as they do it. They need that promise of extra protection when they participate in Family History.
It's hard to keep your teenagers from not becoming self-centered, or feeling entitled. Family History is one way that you can help them with that. and indexing is a very simple way that they can feel the spirit. Maybe they will feel their hearts turning towards their ancestors and they will find themselves thinking more about others and less about themselves.
Heck, they can even index from their phones or iPods if they want to.
Elder Bednar stated:
"Your fingers have been trained to text and tweet to accelerate and advance the work of the Lord—not just to communicate quickly with your friends. The skills and aptitude evident among many young people today are a preparation to contribute to the work of salvation."The lack of routine is the biggest thing I hate about summertime. The older kids would sleep all day and play on FB or watch TV all afternoon if they thought they could. It's maddening, truthfully. While I absolutely LOVE summer, the heat and the freedom it brings, I hate the lack of a schedule or daily routine. I decided that this summer, my teenagers are going to be doing 30 minutes of Indexing every day. If they want TV, video games, friends or Facebook time, then they have to give me 30 minutes of helping to index the 1940 Census.
I need all the help I can get in protecting my teenagers. It's a rough world out there and while I pray and attend the temple regularly with their names in mind, I feel like I need more help. A lady in my stake, who has children that are all grown and married told me that she actively particpates in Temple work and Family History with the hopes that those whom she has found via Family History or those whom she has done temple work for will be present in her grown childrens' lives and offer influence and protection to them from the other side.
I like that idea.
I am hopeful that if my beautiful teenaged children engage in helping to Index the 1940 Census this summer, they will feel the stirrings of the spirit in their hearts and that will help them to remember what's really important: Family.
There are several Stakes that I am aware of that have challenged their youth to Index 1 million names this year. That's pretty awesome. My teenagers are going to participate in this Nation-wide Community Service Project every day this summer. Care to join us?
